How to Reach the Lake District
The M6 is the key motorway to reach the Lake District by road.
You can also reach the Lake District by rail with the following companies: Virgin Trains and First Transpennine Express (travelling from Scotland, the North West, the Midlands and Southern England), Northern Rail (travelling from the North East). When you are travelling from Yorkshire, Greater Manchester or Northern Wales you can also you use Northern Rail and First TransPennine Express.
Oxenholme is the main station for the Lake District from London and Scotland.
The following information should give you an idea about the journey times:
- 3h 44mins from London Euston to Penrith
- 1h 36mins from Manchester Piccadilly to Penrith
- 3h 55mins from London Euston to Kendal (with a change at Oxenholme)
You can fly to the Lake District using the following airports: Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow, Newcastle and Blackpool. They are all well connected to the M6 motorway and less than 90 minutes drive away.
